Elden Ring Nightreign Ditching Popular FromSoftware Feature
Elden Ring Nightreign: No In-Game Messaging System
FromSoftware has confirmed that Elden Ring Nightreign will not feature an in-game messaging system, a staple of the Soulsborne series. This decision, according to game director Junya Ishizaki, is a practical one. The fast-paced, multiplayer-focused design of Nightreign, with anticipated play sessions of around 40 minutes, leaves insufficient time for players to read and write messages.
The asynchronous messaging system, a beloved feature allowing players to leave messages for each other, has been a significant part of the Soulsborne experience. Its absence in Nightreign marks a departure from tradition. Ishizaki explained to IGN Japan that the system's inclusion would clash with the game's intended intensity and pacing.
Preserving Asynchronous Elements
While the messaging system is omitted, FromSoftware plans to enhance other asynchronous features. The bloodstain mechanic, for example, will return, allowing players to learn from and even loot the ghosts of fallen comrades. This reinforces the game's focus on a more intense and streamlined experience.
A 'Compressed' RPG Experience
FromSoftware aims to create a "compressed RPG" in Nightreign, prioritizing consistent intensity and multiplayer interaction. The game's three-day structure reflects this goal, minimizing downtime and maximizing variety. This design philosophy directly informs the removal of the messaging system.
Nightreign is slated for a 2025 release, as revealed during The Game Awards 2024. However, a precise release date remains unannounced.
