Andreas Ullmann, Denuvo's product manager, recently defended the company's anti-piracy technology against persistent criticism from the gaming community. He characterized the gamer response as "very toxic," attributing much of the negative feedback, particularly concerning performance issues, to misinformation and confirmation bias.

Denuvo's anti-tamper DRM is widely used by major publishers to protect new game releases from piracy, with titles like Final Fantasy 16 employing the technology. However, gamers frequently claim Denuvo negatively impacts performance, often citing anecdotal evidence or unverified benchmarks. Ullmann countered this, stating that cracked versions, far from being faster, actually contain additional code running on top of Denuvo's, resulting in potentially worse performance. He acknowledged that legitimate performance issues exist in some cases, citing Tekken 7 as an example, but this contradicts their official FAQ, which claims Denuvo has no perceptible performance impact.

Ullmann, himself a gamer, acknowledged the frustration surrounding DRM, highlighting the lack of immediate player benefits. He argued, however, that Denuvo provides substantial benefits to developers, citing studies indicating a 20% revenue increase in games with effective DRM. He suggested that misinformation from the piracy community fuels the negative perception, urging gamers to consider Denuvo's contribution to the industry's long-term health and the potential for extended game support and future content.

Denuvo's attempt to improve communication by launching a public Discord server backfired spectacularly. Overwhelmed by a flood of anti-DRM memes and criticism, the server's main chat was shut down within 48 hours, forcing a temporary shift to read-only mode. Despite this setback, Ullmann remains committed to improving communication, planning to expand outreach to platforms like Reddit and Steam forums.

The success of Denuvo's future transparency efforts in changing gamer perceptions remains to be seen. However, their attempts to control the narrative aim to establish a more balanced dialogue between gamers and developers, fostering "honest, nice conversations" about the gaming industry.
