Avowed's release has been a success, with Microsoft and Obsidian reportedly pleased with sales figures. In a February 22, 2025 Bloomberg interview, Avowed Game Director Carrie Patel discussed the potential for expansions or a sequel. While Obsidian hasn't formally announced any plans, Patel expressed her strong desire to continue working on the game's world. She stated, "Now that we’ve built this wonderful world, and also built this team strength and muscle memory around the content and gameplay in this world, I’d love to see us do more with it."

Navigating the Challenges of Avowed's Development

Avowed's development journey wasn't without its hurdles and changes. Patel described the process as "messy," but ultimately rewarding. The project, initiated in 2018, faced initial uncertainty as Obsidian prepared for a potential sale. Following Microsoft's acquisition and the 2020 game announcement, several features, including multiplayer, were cut. A January 2021 leadership change and game reboot further reshaped the project.

Patel highlighted the challenges of managing a team of over 80 people during this period, stating, "Normally if you’re stepping back and reevaluating your creative direction...you would do that with a very small team." Under her leadership, the team refocused on strengthening the story and lore from the Pillars of Eternity franchise and transitioned from an open world to open zones, resulting in improved level design. Patel concluded, "There’s this interesting thing I’ve seen on every project I’ve worked on…things are messy, messy, messy, then they start coming together."

Pillars of Eternity Tactics in the Works?

With the resurgence of the Pillars of Eternity franchise through Avowed, Obsidian is exploring the possibility of a Pillars of Eternity Tactics game. During a February 23, 2025 Twitch livestream, Pillars of Eternity and Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire Director Josh Sawyer revealed this interest, stating, "Pillars: Tactics is a thing that a lot of people would like…there are a lot of people who like tactics games." However, he acknowledged the challenges in determining the game's scope, including team size, visual quality, and overall scale. While previous reports indicated developer interest in a tactics game, Avowed's success may now pave the way for this project.

Sawyer also reiterated his desire to create Pillars of Eternity 3, but envisions a significantly larger budget, comparable to Baldur’s Gate 3's $100 million investment, a substantial increase from the budget of Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire.
