PoE 2 Developers Weigh In on Endgame Challenges
Path of Exile 2's challenging endgame has sparked debate among players, prompting a response from the developers. Co-directors Mark Roberts and Jonathan Rogers, in an interview, defended the difficulty, emphasizing the importance of meaningful consequences for death. They argued that the current system, which includes the loss of experience points in the Atlas of Worlds, prevents players from progressing beyond their capabilities. Rogers stated, "If you’re dying all the time then you’re probably not ready to keep going up the power curve."
While acknowledging player concerns, the developers affirmed their commitment to maintaining a challenging endgame experience. They are currently reviewing the various factors contributing to the difficulty, aiming to preserve the core gameplay loop. The team highlighted that simplifying aspects like reverting to a single portal system would fundamentally alter the game's feel.
Path of Exile 2, launched in early access in December 2024, features a revamped skill system with 240 active skill gems and 12 character classes. The endgame, accessed after completing the six-act story, consists of 100 challenging maps within the Atlas of Worlds. These maps present players with difficult bosses, intricate layouts, and the need for highly optimized builds. The recent Patch 0.1.0 addressed various bugs and performance issues, particularly on PlayStation 5. Further adjustments are expected in Patch 0.1.1.
Despite the availability of advanced strategies and guides focusing on high-tier maps, gear optimization, and portal usage, the endgame's difficulty remains a significant hurdle for many players. The Atlas of Worlds, a network of interconnected maps, requires players to conquer challenging encounters and defeat powerful beasts to progress. This demanding endgame is intended for experienced players who have mastered the core mechanics and built powerful characters.
