Exploring Monster Hunter Wilds' Oilwell Basin: A Deep Dive into its Ecosystem and New Monsters

Monster Hunter Wilds introduces the Oilwell Basin, a dynamic locale unlike any other in the franchise. This fiery, oil-silt covered landscape, designed with verticality in mind, shifts dramatically depending on the environmental cycle (Fallow, Inclemency, Plenty). The top strata bask in sunlight, while the lower levels become increasingly hotter, culminating in lava flows. This unique environment supports a diverse ecosystem, fueled not by sunlight and vegetation, but by geothermal energy.

Director Yuya Tokuda and executive director/art director Kaname Fujioka shed light on the Oilwell Basin's design and its inhabitants:

Rompopolo: The Toxic Trickster

Rompopolo, a globular, noxious monster, was conceived as a chaotic, swamp-dwelling creature utilizing stored toxic gas. Its design, inspired by a "mad scientist" aesthetic, features a chemical purple hue and glowing red eyes. Interestingly, its crafted equipment is surprisingly cute, a playful contrast to its menacing appearance.

Ajarakan: The Flaming Brawler

Ajarakan, a massive, flame-enveloped gorilla-like monster, stands in stark contrast to Rompopolo. Its design emphasizes straightforward, powerful attacks, utilizing its fists and incorporating the Oilwell Basin's fiery elements. Its towering silhouette and wrestling-inspired grabs make it a visually striking and formidable opponent. The developers consciously aimed for a monster whose strength was easily understood, yet still visually impressive.

Nu Udra: The Apex Predator

Reigning supreme over the Oilwell Basin is Nu Udra, a colossal, octopus-like creature covered in flammable oil. Its design, inspired by octopuses, features a striking silhouette and demonic horns, while obscuring its face. Its movements, inspired by past tentacled monsters like Lagiacrus, present a significant challenge, requiring strategic attacks to sever its numerous tentacles. The team employed new technologies to achieve Nu Udra's fluid, flexible animations, allowing for unique behaviors like squeezing into tight spaces. Its attacks are a mix of focused strikes and area-of-effect attacks, further highlighted by light-emitting sensory organs on its tentacle tips. Flash Bombs are ineffective against it.

Gravios's Return

The Oilwell Basin also sees the return of Gravios, a fan-favorite monster from Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate. Its hard, rocky carapace and emission of hot gas make it a perfect fit for the environment. The developers aimed to make Gravios a challenging late-game encounter, requiring hunters to utilize the wound system and part breaking to overcome its formidable defenses.

Other Monsters

While not detailed extensively, the interview confirms that many other monsters will inhabit the Oilwell Basin, promising a varied and exciting hunting experience.

The development team's dedication to creating memorable and unique monsters is evident throughout the interview, highlighting their innovative approach to design and their commitment to pushing technological boundaries. The Oilwell Basin promises a thrilling and visually stunning hunting experience, filled with challenging encounters and a richly detailed ecosystem.
