Assassin's Creed Shadows: A Revamped Parkour System and Dual Protagonists

Assassin's Creed Shadows, Ubisoft's highly anticipated feudal Japan adventure, is set to launch on February 14th. This latest installment introduces significant changes, most notably a revamped parkour system and dual protagonists with distinct playstyles.

The game's parkour has been redesigned, shifting from the free-climbing mechanics of previous titles to a system of designated "parkour highways." While this might initially seem restrictive, Ubisoft assures players that most climbable surfaces remain accessible, albeit requiring a more strategic approach. The focus is on creating more fluid and engaging pathways, enhancing the overall parkour experience. This change, according to Associate Game Director Simon Lemay-Comtois, allows for more controlled level design, differentiating the movement capabilities of the two protagonists.

Speaking of protagonists, Shadows introduces Naoe, a stealthy shinobi adept at scaling walls and navigating shadows, and Yasuke, a powerful samurai excelling in open combat but lacking climbing abilities. This dual protagonist system caters to both fans of classic stealth gameplay and those who prefer the more action-oriented RPG combat seen in titles like Odyssey and Valhalla.

Further enhancing the parkour experience, Shadows introduces seamless ledge dismounts, allowing for stylish flips and maneuvers during descents. A new prone position also enables sprinting dives and slides, adding another layer of dynamic movement.

While the shift to designated climbing routes might initially raise concerns, Ubisoft emphasizes that the majority of environments remain explorable, particularly with the aid of a grappling hook. Players will simply need to identify appropriate entry points for vertical traversal.

With its unique setting, dual protagonists, and refined parkour system, Assassin's Creed Shadows is poised to make a significant impact. However, its February release date places it in direct competition with other highly anticipated titles such as Monster Hunter Wilds, Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, and Avowed. The coming weeks will undoubtedly reveal more about this ambitious title as its launch draws nearer. The game will be available on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
