'Street Fighter' Reboot Secures Director
Legendary Entertainment's upcoming Street Fighter film adaptation has found its director: Kitao Sakurai, the creative force behind the comedic masterpiece, The Eric Andre Show. This news, reported by The Hollywood Reporter, signals a potentially unique approach to the iconic fighting game franchise.
Capcom's significant involvement ensures the film will stay true to the source material, and a release date of March 20, 2026, is already locked in.
This isn't the first cinematic attempt to capture the essence of Street Fighter. The 1994 adaptation, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, Ming-Na Wen, and the late Raul Julia, remains a cult classic despite mixed initial critical reception. While casting details are yet to be revealed, fans can anticipate seeing their beloved Street Fighter characters on the big screen.
The project initially saw Danny and Michael Philippou (directors of Talk to Me) attached, but they left in 2023. Sakurai's involvement suggests a possible shift towards a more absurdist, comedic tone, a direction that could resonate well with fans who appreciate the game's cartoonish elements.
In the meantime, players can dive into the latest installment, Street Fighter 6, which recently introduced the new character, Mai Shiranui. Read our comprehensive Street Fighter 6 review for a deeper dive.
