Chris Evans Denies Return to Marvel Cinematic Universe Despite Reports

Despite recent reports suggesting his return, Chris Evans has definitively stated he will not be reprising his role as Captain America in Avengers: Doomsday or any other Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film. Evans directly refuted a Deadline report claiming his return alongside Robert Downey Jr., calling it "not true" in an interview with Esquire.

This contradicts information shared by Anthony Mackie, the current Captain America, who previously stated his manager informed him of Evans' return. However, Mackie subsequently spoke to Evans, who confirmed his retirement from the MCU, stating, "I’m happily retired."

Evans' statement to Esquire firmly shuts down the speculation: "That’s not true…This always happens…I’ve just stopped responding to it. Yeah, no. Happily retired."

While Evans has returned to the Marvel universe in a smaller, comedic role as Johnny Storm in Deadpool & Wolverine, his return as Captain America remains firmly off the table.

The MCU's future is currently uncertain following the removal of Jonathan Majors, who was cast as Kang, from the franchise after facing assault and harassment charges. Majors' planned role as the MCU's next Thanos was significant, and his departure has seemingly impacted Marvel's plans.

With Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr., announced as the new antagonist, speculation arose regarding the return of other original Avengers. However, only Downey Jr.'s casting has been officially confirmed.

Benedict Cumberbatch, the Doctor Strange actor, confirmed his absence from Avengers: Doomsday, but will feature in its sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars, in a "central role." The Russo Brothers are directing Avengers: Doomsday, which is expected to continue the multiverse storyline, with Hayley Atwell's Agent Carter also rumored to appear.
