Clair Obscur: 'FF' and 'Persona' Inspirations Shine in Expedition 33
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33: A Turn-Based RPG Inspired by Classics
Sandfall Interactive's upcoming turn-based RPG, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, is making waves with its unique blend of turn-based combat and real-time elements. Inspired by the Belle Epoque era of France and classic JRPGs, the game draws heavily from the Final Fantasy and Persona series, while forging its own identity.
The game's director, Guillaume Broche, recently discussed the inspirations behind the project. He highlighted his passion for turn-based games and a desire to create a title with high-fidelity graphics, citing Persona and Octopath Traveler as stylistic influences. However, Broche emphasizes that while these games served as inspiration, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 isn't a direct imitation.
The core gameplay blends turn-based strategy with real-time reactions. Players input commands in a turn-based system but must also react swiftly to enemy attacks. This dynamic approach draws parallels to titles like Persona, Final Fantasy, and Sea of Stars. Broche specifically notes the significant influence of Final Fantasy VIII, IX, and X on the game's core mechanics.
Exploration is also a key component. The open world allows players to freely switch between party members and utilize unique traversal abilities to solve environmental puzzles. Broche playfully encourages players to experiment with unconventional strategies and character builds.
The narrative centers on preventing the enigmatic Paintress from unleashing death once more, with unique environments like the gravity-defying Flying Waters adding to the game's distinctive atmosphere. The development team aims to create a game that resonates with players in the same way classic JRPGs impacted their lives.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is slated for release on PC, PS5, and Xbox in 2025.
