Capcom Enhances iOS Versions of 'Resident Evil 4', 'Village', and '7' with Online DRM
TouchArcade Rating:
Capcom's latest update for *Resident Evil 7 biohazard*, *Resident Evil 4* Remake, and *Resident Evil Village* on iOS and iPadOS, released just an hour ago, has introduced a significant change that impacts the gaming experience. Previously, these premium-priced ports were fully functional offline, allowing players to dive into their chilling adventures without an internet connection. However, the new update adds an online DRM (Digital Rights Management) system that checks your purchase history every time you launch the game. This means you must be connected to the internet to verify ownership before you can access your save files and continue playing.
Upon launching any of these three games, you'll encounter a prompt asking to confirm your purchase. If you select "no," the game will close immediately. If you're online, the verification process takes just a few seconds, but it's a mandatory step that you can't bypass. This change is particularly disappointing because it diminishes the user experience by making these games dependent on an internet connection, which was not the case before the update.
Before this update, I personally tested all three games and confirmed they worked seamlessly offline. Now, with the new DRM in place, clicking "no" on the purchase verification prompt results in the game shutting down. While this might not bother everyone, I find the addition of online DRM to games that were already purchased to be a step backward. It's my hope that Capcom will reconsider this approach and perhaps implement a less intrusive method for verifying purchases, such as periodic checks rather than every launch.
This update makes it more challenging to recommend Capcom's premium-priced ports. If you haven't yet tried these games, they are available for free on iOS, iPadOS, and macOS.
