Application Description

Button Mapper is a versatile tool that simplifies the process of remapping custom actions to your device's hardware buttons. Whether you're looking to launch apps, shortcuts, or perform specific actions with a single, double, or long press, Button Mapper offers a seamless solution.

With Button Mapper, you can remap most physical or capacitive keys and buttons, including volume buttons, some assist buttons, and capacitive home, back, and recent apps keys. This functionality extends to many gamepads, remotes, and other peripheral devices, making it a comprehensive tool for customizing your hardware interactions.

No root access is needed for most actions, though some advanced features may require an adb command from a connected PC if your device is not rooted. Note that Button Mapper does not function when the screen is off unless your device is rooted or you've executed an adb command.

Here are some examples of what you can achieve with Button Mapper:

  • Use a long press to toggle your flashlight
  • Remap your TV remote control
  • Press to broadcast custom intents, scripts, or commands
  • Use a long press to open the camera and take a photo
  • Double tap to launch your favorite app or shortcut
  • Double tap to open your notifications
  • Swap your back and recent apps keys (for capacitive buttons only)
  • Use your volume buttons to adjust screen brightness
  • Toggle "do not disturb" mode with a long press
  • And much more

The pro version of Button Mapper unlocks additional features such as:

  • Simulating keycodes (requires adb command or root)
  • Swapping volume keys on orientation change
  • Defaulting to ring volume on Android Pie or later
  • Pocket detection
  • Customizable themes
  • Changing back and recents buttons
  • Customizing haptic feedback on button press and long press

You can map a wide range of actions to your buttons or keys, including:

  • Launching any app or shortcut
  • Disabling the button
  • Broadcasting intents (PRO)
  • Running scripts (PRO)
  • Camera shutter
  • Turning the screen off
  • Toggling the flashlight
  • Quick settings access
  • Showing notifications
  • Power dialog
  • Taking screenshots
  • Music controls: previous/next track and play/pause
  • Adjusting volume or muting
  • Switching to the last app
  • Toggling do not disturb mode
  • Adjusting brightness
  • Now on tap (root)
  • Menu button (root)
  • Choosing custom keycode (root and PRO)
  • Executing root commands (root and PRO)
  • Toggling WiFi
  • Toggling Bluetooth
  • Toggling screen rotation
  • Clearing notifications
  • Enabling split screen
  • Scrolling up/down (root)
  • And many more...

Button Mapper supports a variety of buttons, including:

  • Physical home, back, and recent apps/menu buttons
  • Volume up and down
  • Most camera buttons
  • Many headset buttons
  • Custom buttons on your phone, headphones, gamepads, TV remote, and other peripheral devices

Additional customization options include:

  • Adjusting the long press or double tap duration
  • Delaying the initial button press for better double tap operation
  • Disabling Button Mapper while using specific apps
  • Plus many more customizations

If you encounter any issues, ensure that the Button Mapper accessibility service is enabled and allowed to run in the background. Remember that Button Mapper does not work with on-screen buttons (like soft keys or the navigation bar) or the power button. The available options in the app depend on the buttons your phone supports, so not all phones will have home, back, and recents buttons.

Button Mapper uses Accessibility services to detect when physical or capacitive buttons are pressed, allowing them to be remapped to custom actions tailored to your needs. It does not monitor what you type, and it does not collect or share your personal information, ensuring your privacy and security.

The app also uses the Device Administrator permission (BIND_DEVICE_ADMIN) to lock the screen if the "Turn screen off" action is selected. If you wish to remove this permission, you can do so by opening Button Mapper, clicking on the menu (three dots in the upper right corner), and selecting "Uninstall."
