Wuthering Waves’ Kuro Games Acquired by Tencent

Tencent, the Chinese tech giant, has significantly increased its stake in Kuro Games, the developer of popular mobile games Wuthering Waves and Punishing: Gray Raven. This acquisition grants Tencent majority ownership.

Tencent's Increased Stake

Tencent's Majority Ownership of Kuro Games

Tencent now holds approximately 51.4% of Kuro Games' shares, becoming the sole external shareholder. This follows a previous investment in 2023 and the recent withdrawal of other shareholders. While Tencent now holds a controlling interest, Kuro Games maintains its operational independence.

Maintaining Independence

According to sources within Kuro Games, reported by Youxi Putao, the company's operations will remain largely autonomous, mirroring Tencent's relationships with other successful game studios like Riot Games (League of Legends, Valorant) and Supercell (Clash of Clans, Brawl Stars). Kuro Games' official statement emphasizes that this acquisition fosters a "more stable external environment" and supports its long-term independence strategy. Tencent has yet to release an official statement.

Kuro Games' Success

Kuro Games is a prominent Chinese developer, known for its successful action RPG Punishing: Gray Raven and the recently released open-world RPG Wuthering Waves. Both titles have generated over $120 million USD in revenue and continue to receive regular updates. Wuthering Waves has even earned a Players' Voice nomination at The Game Awards.
