Sonic Galactic: A Sonic Mania Spiritual Successor

Sonic Galactic, a fan-made game developed by Starteam, evokes the spirit of Sonic Mania, capturing the charm of classic Sonic gameplay and pixel art. This labor of love, revealed at the 2020 Sonic Amateur Games Expo, has been in development for at least four years. The game imagines a 32-bit Sonic title, reminiscent of a hypothetical Sega Saturn release.

The game's second demo, released in early 2025, offers a compelling experience. Players can control the iconic trio – Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles – across fresh, exciting levels. Joining the roster are two new playable characters: Fang the Sniper (from Sonic Triple Trouble), seeking revenge against Dr. Eggman, and Tunnel the Mole, a character originating from Illusion Island.

Mirroring Sonic Mania's design, each character boasts unique pathways within each zone. The special stages retain Mania's essence, challenging players to collect rings within a time limit in 3D environments. While a complete playthrough of Sonic's levels takes approximately an hour, the additional characters currently offer a single stage each, resulting in a total playtime of around two hours. This makes the demo a great taste of what the full game promises.
