Skyblivion, a Fan Remake of Oblivion in Skyrim's Engine, Is Still Targeting This Year
Skyblivion, the ambitious fan-made remake of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion built within the Skyrim engine, is targeting a 2025 release. A recent developer update stream reaffirmed this goal, showcasing impressive progress. Developed by a dedicated team of volunteers, Skyblivion represents a truly monumental modding undertaking, years in the making. Despite the scale, the team remains confident in a 2025 launch, or even sooner, stating, "We hope with your support to finish the final steps in completing our dream, maybe even beating our own estimation."

Calling it a simple one-to-one remake undersells the project's scope. The Skyblivion team is comprehensively overhauling aspects of the original Oblivion, ensuring "unique items are actually unique" and enhancing existing bosses, such as Mannimarco, to better reflect their in-game importance. The livestream showcased the "A Brush with Death" quest, highlighting the stunning visual improvements.
This impressive undertaking takes on added complexity given rumors of an official Oblivion remake. Alleged details of an official remake surfaced earlier this year, detailing potential combat overhauls and other changes. While Microsoft declined to comment to IGN, the existence of an Oblivion remaster was inadvertently revealed in documents from the Activision Blizzard/FTC trial in 2023. With some of these projects, like an Indiana Jones game, already released, the status of the Oblivion and Fallout 3 remasters remains unconfirmed.
Should Microsoft and Bethesda proceed with an official Oblivion relaunch, Skyblivion's future might become uncertain. Bethesda games have a rich modding history, extending from older titles to Starfield. The hope is that Skyblivion avoids the fate of Fallout London, which encountered difficulties near its release.
