How to Unlock the Gunsmithing Skill in Atomfall

To unlock the crafting recipes for upgraded weapons in *Atomfall*, you must first acquire the Gunsmithing skill. This survival skill is learned by reading the Crafting Manual, a task that can be quite challenging as these skill-related books are scattered throughout the game. However, there's a direct method to obtain the manual.

Head to the Village Shop in Wyndham and speak with Morris Wick, who possesses a copy of the Crafting Manual. Acquiring it from him isn't as simple as bartering; it requires some cunning. Upon entering St. Katherine’s Church, you’ll learn of a recent murder of Maisie, and the Vicar’s attempt to cover it up. Further investigation leads you to evidence that implicates Morris. You can find this crucial evidence in the Brewery Cellar at coordinates 30.5 E, 80.5 N, west of Wyndham Village. Look for a cellar door near a ruined building, enter, and search until you find the note titled "Kill the One They Call Maisie."

Once you have the note, return to Morris’ Village Shop at 33.3 E, 79.9 N. Engage him in conversation, subtly pressuring him with the evidence until you reach the "Bargaining" dialogue option. Choosing this will prompt Morris to hand over the Crafting Manual in exchange for your silence on his crime.

Alternatively, you can find the Crafting Manual in the D Section of The Interchange, but this route is more challenging and time-consuming.

After obtaining and reading the Crafting Manual, you'll need to invest 7 Training Stimulants to unlock the Gunsmith skill, thereby accessing the recipes for upgraded weapons. These stimulants can be found in B.A.R.D. structures like Bunkers and The Interchange.

How To Craft Weapon Upgrades in Atomfall

With the Crafting Manual and Gunsmith skill under your belt, you're ready to craft weapon upgrades. When you pick up a weapon, you'll unlock the recipe for its next tier upgrade, ranging from Rusty to Stock, and finally to Pristine. Upgrading a weapon requires two units of the weapon at the previous tier, along with specific amounts of Gun Oil and Scrap, which vary depending on the weapon.

For instance, to upgrade the Falkirk Battle Rifle to Pristine (as shown above), you'll need 2 Falkirk Battle Rifles (Stock), 3 Gun Oil, and 6 Scrap. You can find Gun Oil and Scrap primarily at military installations like Protocol Camps. If you plan on upgrading weapons frequently, consider investing in the Deep Pockets survival skill to increase your carrying capacity for crafting materials.

Upgrading a weapon to Pristine for the first time will reward you with the 'Make do and mend' Achievement or Trophy.
