Respawn Cancels Multiplayer FPS Project Quietly
Apex Legends developer Respawn has recently canceled an unannounced incubation project, leading to layoffs of an unspecified number of team members involved in the project. The news was initially reported by Insider Gaming, citing a LinkedIn post from a former production coordinator who mentioned being part of the project for the past year before its cancellation.
IGN has independently verified the cancellation of this unannounced multiplayer FPS project. This project was developed by a team that had previously been working on a now-canceled Star Wars FPS at Respawn. While the exact number of layoffs remains undisclosed, sources have described it as "small." Additionally, at least one individual associated with the project has stated on LinkedIn that their exit was voluntary.
This cancellation is part of a broader trend of project cancellations, layoffs, and restructuring within Electronic Arts (EA), which began in 2023. That year, EA eliminated 50 jobs at BioWare and an unknown number at Codemasters. The trend continued nearly a year later with the layoff of 670 employees across the company and the termination of multiple projects, including the Star Wars FPS. As a result of these cuts, around two dozen Respawn employees were also laid off. Since then, BioWare has undergone further restructuring, with developers being reassigned to other projects and additional key personnel being let go.
IGN has contacted Electronic Arts for a statement regarding these developments.
