Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons May Function as Computer Mice: Evidence from Shipping Manifests

Recent circumstantial evidence suggests the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons may offer an unconventional computer mouse-like functionality. While the widespread adoption by game developers remains uncertain, this aligns with Nintendo's history of innovative controller designs.

The evidence comes from Famiboards user LiC, who analyzed Vietnamese customs data related to a suspected Nintendo parts supplier. This data source has previously yielded numerous Switch 2 rumors.

In early January 2025, LiC revealed entries detailing polyethylene (PE) adhesive tape described as "mouse soles" – a term for the bottom of computer mice – intended "to stick to game console handles." Two model numbers, LG7 and SML7, were mentioned, but these are not found in public component databases, hinting at unreleased products. The tape's reported 90 x 90mm size suggests it could cover the entire back of the Joy-Cons, potentially requiring trimming during assembly.

Not a First for Handheld Consoles

While novel for Nintendo, a mouse-like controller mode isn't unprecedented. The Lenovo Legion GO, released in 2023, features a right controller that functions as a mouse when rotated sideways. Lenovo even includes a plastic housing to aid its smooth operation on surfaces. This, along with the Legion GO's magnetic controller rails (a rumored Switch 2 feature), offers a potential preview of Nintendo's hybrid console approach.
