"Magic: The Gathering Universe Goes Cinematic"
Hasbro has exciting news for fans of Magic: The Gathering, announcing plans to expand the beloved card game into a multimedia franchise that will enchant screens everywhere. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hasbro is teaming up with Legendary Entertainment to craft a shared Magic: The Gathering universe that will span both movies and television series. The journey begins with a feature film, setting the stage for an expansive narrative universe.
Legendary Entertainment, known for its work on films like Dune and the Godzilla series, including Godzilla vs. Kong, as well as Detective Pikachu, is at the helm of this project. "We pride ourselves on being thoughtful caretakers of singular, beloved IP, and no property better fits that description than Magic: The Gathering," stated Legendary’s chairman of worldwide production. This commitment to preserving the essence of the game while bringing it to new audiences is at the heart of their approach.
While details are still emerging, it appears that the movie and TV projects at Legendary will stand apart from the previously announced Magic: The Gathering animated series set to debut on Netflix. However, there's a possibility that the plans might evolve, and the animated series could eventually become part of this larger shared universe.
Originally created by Wizards of the Coast in 1993, Magic: The Gathering has evolved into one of the world's most celebrated trading card games. Wizards of the Coast became a part of the Hasbro family in 1999, and since then, Hasbro has demonstrated a knack for transforming its iconic brands into cinematic experiences. From G.I. Joe and Transformers to Dungeons and Dragons, Hasbro's portfolio is diverse and dynamic. The company is currently developing several projects, including new G.I. Joe films, a Power Rangers movie, and a Beyblade film, showcasing its commitment to bringing its beloved properties to the big screen.
