The CEO of Genki, Eddie Tsai, has shed light on the much-anticipated Nintendo Switch 2, confirming several rumors and speculations. At CES 2025, Genki, known for its innovative handheld gaming gadgets like the PocketPro game controller, unveiled a 3D-printed mockup of the Nintendo Switch 2. This mockup, based on a Switch 2 reportedly purchased on the black market, provided a detailed look at the upcoming console's design and features.
During the event, Genki allowed attendees to closely examine the mockup, which showcased a design that's larger than the current Switch, resembling the size of Valve's Steam Deck. Key features included seemingly magnetic Joy-Con, a second USB-C port, and a new button labeled "C."
In an interview with The Verge, Genki CEO Eddie Tsai provided further insights into the Switch 2's design. He confirmed that the Joy-Con on the new console are indeed magnetic, with the SL and SR buttons utilizing this technology. To detach the Joy-Con, a large button on each controller releases a pin that breaks the magnetic connection with the console's chassis. Despite the shift from sliding rails to magnets, Tsai assured that the Joy-Con remain securely attached during gameplay.
Genki Shares Additional Details About the Switch 2
Eddie Tsai also revealed more about the Switch 2's features. Each Joy-Con's "mounting channel" includes an optical sensor, hinting at potential new functionalities, such as using the Joy-Con as a mouse with a new attachment possibly connected via the magnetic SL and SR buttons. Recent leaks of Switch 2 images online have corroborated this, with many noting the presence of optical sensors on the new Joy-Con.
Despite its increased size, the Switch 2 remains slim enough to fit into the current Nintendo Switch dock. However, specific indentations on the new console prevent it from being compatible with the original dock. As for the mysterious "C" button and the additional USB-C port, Genki has yet to uncover their purposes.
