Annapurna Interactive's Entire Game Division Resigns, Casting Doubt on Future Projects

A mass resignation has shaken Annapurna Interactive, the video game publishing arm of Annapurna Pictures. The entire staff, including President Nathan Gary, resigned following failed negotiations with parent company Annapurna Pictures.

The Breakdown of Negotiations

The resignation stems from an attempt by Annapurna Interactive's employees to establish the division as an independent entity. These efforts, however, proved unsuccessful, leading to the departure of over 20 employees in the wake of Gary's resignation.

According to Bloomberg, Gary confirmed the collective resignation of all 25 team members, emphasizing the difficult nature of the decision. This leaves numerous indie developers who partnered with Annapurna in uncertain situations, questioning the future of their projects and contracts.

Annapurna Pictures Responds

Annapurna Pictures' Megan Ellison has assured partners of their commitment to ongoing projects and their continued expansion within interactive entertainment. She stated their intention to integrate linear and interactive storytelling across various media.

The Aftermath and New Leadership

To address the situation, Annapurna Interactive has appointed Hector Sanchez, a co-founder, as its new president. While sources suggest Sanchez intends to honor existing contracts and replace departed staff, the impact on ongoing collaborations remains to be seen. Remedy Entertainment, for instance, clarified that their agreement for Control 2 is with Annapurna Pictures and that they are self-publishing the game.

This mass exodus follows a recent restructuring announcement by Annapurna, which also saw the departure of Deborah Mars and Nathan Vella. The future of Annapurna Interactive remains uncertain, pending the successful implementation of Sanchez's leadership and the resolution of outstanding partnerships.
