Obsidian Entertainment's Avowed promises players "continuous opportunities to express and explore their character's alignment" through complex, multi-ending gameplay. Game director Carrie Patel explained to Game Developer that every decision, large or small, contributes to a cohesive player experience.

"It's about providing players with constant opportunities to express and explore their character's leanings," Patel stated. She emphasized the importance of mindful gameplay, prompting players to consider: "When am I engaged? When am I curious? When does my interest wane? What keeps me invested moment to moment?"

Patel highlighted that player choices and their consequences are deeply intertwined with exploration of Eora's intricate world, particularly the political landscape of The Living Lands. "I've enjoyed weaving together the narratives that connect these two worlds," she added.

Players assume the role of an Aedyran Empire envoy, tasked with investigating a spiritual plague while simultaneously pursuing their political goals. "Giving players rich content to delve into—that's what makes it meaningful roleplay," Patel noted. "It's about defining who you want to be in this world, and how situations allow you to express that identity."

Beyond the complex RPG mechanics, Avowed features strategic combat blending magic, swords, and firearms. "The abilities and weapon combinations you choose dramatically alter each playthrough," Patel confirmed.

Furthermore, Patel confirmed to IGN the existence of numerous endings, with "many different combinations" possible. She revealed, "We have double-digit ending slides, and you can achieve a wide variety of combinations." She added, "True to Obsidian's style, your ending truly reflects the sum of your choices throughout the game, shaped by the content you encounter and your actions within it."
