Although The Boy and the Heron was initially rumored to be Hayao Miyazaki's swan song, as of October 2023, Miyazaki is actively working on his next project for Studio Ghibli. Producer Toshio Suzuki shared, "He's thinking about this next project every day, and I can't stop him — in fact, I've given up. I no longer try to dissuade him, even if he were to make a failed film. In life, it's only the work that delights him." No further details about the upcoming project have been announced, leaving fans eagerly anticipating what new wonders Miyazaki has in store.
