Exploring Retro Gaming on the Nintendo Switch: GBA and DS Gems
This article takes a slightly different approach to reviewing retro games on the Nintendo Switch. Unlike other consoles with a plethora of Game Boy Advance (GBA) and Nintendo DS ports, the Switch's selection is surprisingly smaller. Therefore, we're combining both GBA and DS titles into a single list, showcasing those available on the Switch eShop. Here are ten of our favorites—four GBA and six DS games—presented without any particular ranking.
Game Boy Advance
Steel Empire (2004) – Part of Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)
Kicking things off is the shoot 'em up, Steel Empire. While the Genesis/Mega Drive version holds a slight edge in my opinion, this GBA iteration is still enjoyable. It's a worthwhile comparison piece and offers a more streamlined experience. Regardless of the platform, Steel Empire is a captivating game, even for those who aren't typically drawn to shooters.
Mega Man Zero – Included in Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)
As the Mega Man X series faltered on home consoles, the Mega Man Zero series emerged on the GBA as a true successor. This side-scrolling action title, while not perfectly polished in its initial release, lays the groundwork for an excellent series. Its imperfections are refined in later installments, but the first game is the perfect starting point.
Mega Man Battle Network – Included in Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)
A second Mega Man entry warrants inclusion, as Mega Man Zero and Mega Man Battle Network offer distinctly different gameplay experiences. This RPG features a unique battle system blending action and strategy. The concept of a virtual world existing within electronic devices is cleverly executed. While the series' later installments saw diminishing returns, the original remains highly entertaining.
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Included in Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)
The Castlevania Advance Collection is a must-have, but if you had to pick just one, Aria of Sorrow is the clear winner. For me, it even surpasses the acclaimed Symphony of the Night on occasion. The soul-collecting system encourages exploration, and the gameplay is so engaging that the grinding doesn't feel tedious. A unique setting and hidden secrets further enhance this exceptional third-party GBA title.
Nintendo DS
Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut ($9.99)
The original Shantae gained cult status, but limited distribution hindered its reach. Shantae: Risky’s Revenge, initially released on DSiWare, propelled the Half-Genie Hero into the mainstream. Its success has ensured Shantae's continued presence across console generations. Interestingly, this title has roots in an unreleased GBA game, which is slated for release soon.
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Included in Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)
One could argue this belongs in the GBA section, as it originated there. However, the original release wasn't localized. Ace Attorney combines engaging investigations with dramatic courtroom sequences, blending humor and compelling narratives. The first game is exceptionally well-crafted, although later entries are also highly regarded.
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)
From the creator of Ace Attorney, Ghost Trick boasts equally strong writing and a unique gameplay mechanic. As a ghost, you must utilize your abilities to save others while uncovering the mystery surrounding your own death. This captivating game deserves recognition for its originality and well-crafted narrative.
The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)
The World Ends With You is a top-tier Nintendo DS title, ideally experienced on its original hardware. While ports haven't perfectly replicated the original experience, the Switch version serves as a viable alternative for those without access to a DS.
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Included in Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)
The recently released Castlevania Dominus Collection includes all the Nintendo DS Castlevania games. Dawn of Sorrow stands out due to the improved button controls replacing the gimmicky touch controls of the original. However, all three DS games within the collection are well worth playing.
Etrian Odyssey III HD – Included in Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)
The Etrian Odyssey series thrives on the DS/3DS ecosystem. Atlus's Switch adaptation is playable, and each Etrian Odyssey game offers a substantial RPG experience. Etrian Odyssey III, the largest of the three, is a rewarding, albeit challenging, adventure.
