LEGO's foray into video games began nearly 31 years ago with "LEGO Fun to Build" on the SEGA Pico. Since then, the brand has evolved into a genre of its own, largely thanks to Traveler’s Tales and their engaging action-platforming games, as well as the incorporation of various popular culture franchises into the LEGO universe.

Narrowing down the best LEGO games was no easy task, but we've carefully selected our Top 10 LEGO games to date. For those interested in newer releases, don't miss out on LEGO Fortnite, which has recently hit the gaming scene.

  1. LEGO Island

No list of the best LEGO games would be complete without "LEGO Island," the pioneering 1997 PC adventure. While it might appear basic and less graphically polished compared to newer entries, "LEGO Island" remains a fun, nostalgic experience. In this game, you're tasked with stopping an escaped convict, the Brickster, from dismantling the island. The game's open-world format and variety of character classes offer an engaging and comforting playthrough. It might be challenging to find today, but revisiting LEGO Island is definitely worthwhile—just keep an eye out for the Brickster.

  1. LEGO The Lord of the Rings

"LEGO The Lord of the Rings" stands out for its unique approach, using audio directly from the movies instead of new recordings. This creative decision adds a humorous twist to iconic scenes, like Boromir's emotional death being comically bombarded with bananas. The game is packed with Easter eggs, such as the Assassin's Creed-inspired haystack jump, and includes characters from the books, like Tom Bombadil, not seen in the films. Combined with the familiar LEGO gameplay of puzzles and action, "LEGO The Lord of the Rings" is a standout title in the franchise.

This game covers the events of the first three movies with a playful twist on the more adult scenes. It offers improved gameplay over the earlier "LEGO Star Wars" titles, with a focus on puzzle-solving and exploration rather than combat. The game remains a delightful experience in co-op mode and has aged gracefully since its release nearly 15 years ago. It's a modern classic that truly belongs in a museum.
