Chris Brown, Director of eSports at The Pokémon Company, recently stated in a VGC interview (February 25, 2025) that while they continually evaluate potential additions to their competitive scene, Pokémon TCG Pocket isn't currently on the list. He lightheartedly mentioned Pokémon Sleep as another example of a title not currently considered for competitive play, referencing a past April Fool's joke. However, he emphasized that the possibility remains open for future consideration.

Early Stages and Balancing Concerns

While no official reasons have been given, speculation points to the game's relative youth (only four months old with two sets released since its October 2024 launch) and ongoing balance issues. Although Pokémon TCG Pocket features competitive elements, players have voiced concerns about balancing. The game’s simplified mechanics, designed for a broader audience, may not currently lend themselves to a highly competitive environment in the same way as the traditional card game.

Despite this, The Pokémon Company’s competitive circuit remains robust, encompassing Pokémon TCG, Pokémon GO, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, and Pokémon Unite, all set to feature prominently at the upcoming Pokémon World Championships in Anaheim, California, August 2025.
