Microsoft to Integrate Copilot AI into Xbox App and Games

Author : Lucy Update : Apr 11,2025

Microsoft is taking its AI integration to the next level by introducing its AI Copilot into the Xbox experience. This new feature, designed to enhance your gaming, will offer advice, help you recall where you left off in your last session, and handle other tasks to streamline your playtime. The rollout for Xbox Insiders will occur soon through the Xbox mobile app, marking a significant step in testing this innovative tool.

For those unfamiliar, Copilot is Microsoft's AI chatbot that replaced Cortana in 2023 and is already embedded within Windows. The gaming version of Copilot will launch with several features. You'll be able to command it to install games on your Xbox, a task currently achievable with a simple button press on the app. Additionally, you can inquire about your play history, achievements, game library, or seek recommendations for your next gaming adventure. While playing, you can interact with Copilot directly on the Xbox app, receiving responses akin to those on Windows.

One of the most promising applications at launch is Copilot serving as a gaming assistant. You can ask questions about games, such as strategies to defeat bosses or solve puzzles, and Copilot will pull answers from Bing, utilizing various online guides, websites, wikis, and forums. This feature will soon extend to the Xbox app, allowing you to seek assistance while gaming. Microsoft aims to ensure the accuracy of the information by collaborating with game studios, ensuring that Copilot's responses reflect the developers' intentions and direct players back to the original sources.

Microsoft's ambitions don't stop there. In a press briefing, spokespeople hinted at future possibilities, such as Copilot acting as a walkthrough assistant to explain game functions, remind players of item locations, or guide them to new discoveries. It might also serve as a real-time strategist in competitive games, offering tips to counter opponents or explaining gameplay dynamics. While these are still conceptual, Microsoft is clearly dedicated to weaving Copilot deeply into the fabric of Xbox gameplay. They have also confirmed intentions to collaborate with both first-party and third-party studios to integrate Copilot into a broader range of games.

When asked about user control over Copilot, Microsoft clarified that Xbox Insiders can opt out during the preview phase. However, they left open the possibility that Copilot might become mandatory in the future. A spokesperson stated, "During this preview on mobile, players will be able to decide how and when they want to interact with Copilot for Gaming, whether it has access to their conversation history, and what it does on their behalf. As we preview and test Copilot for Gaming with players early, we will continue to be transparent about what data we collect, how we use it, and the choices players have around sharing their personal data."

Moreover, Copilot's utility is not limited to gamers. Microsoft will explore its use for developers, with plans to be discussed at the upcoming Game Developers Conference next week. This move signals Microsoft's broader vision to enhance gaming experiences through AI, both for players and creators alike.
