Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein: A 20-Year Journey in Horror Cinema
Guillermo del Toro's passion for Frankenstein might just rival that of Dr. Frankenstein himself. At the Next on Netflix preview event, the acclaimed writer-director shared a video message, giving fans a tantalizing glimpse into his much-anticipated adaptation of the classic tale. Although del Toro mentioned that a trailer won't be available until this summer, Netflix treated viewers to a first-look image of Oscar Isaac embodying the iconic mad scientist.
"This film has been on my mind since I was a child — for 50 years," del Toro revealed in the video, as reported by Variety. "I've been trying to make it for 20 to 25 years. In fact, some people may even think I am a little bit obsessed with Frankenstein." As he spoke, he gestured towards the array of Frankenstein figures and collectibles that adorn his renowned Bleak House.
Del Toro also teased some exclusive footage, showcasing Oscar Isaac's Victor Frankenstein in a confrontation with Mia Goth's character, who appears as an elegant aristocrat. Additionally, Jacob Elordi was seen as Frankenstein's monster, sporting long black hair, stitched-up gray skin, and a striking red glint in his eyes. Unfortunately, this footage is not available online yet.
"You see, over the decades, the character has fused with my soul in a way that it has become an autobiography," del Toro elaborated. "It doesn’t get more personal than this."
The director's dedication to bringing Frankenstein to life is undeniable. Known for films like Pan's Labyrinth and Hellboy, del Toro's journey to adapt this story has been long and arduous. Let's delve into the extended development of Netflix's upcoming Frankenstein movie...
