It’s hard to overstate the immense amount of time invested in creating the universe of Grimguard Tactics. 
Set in the shadowy realm of Terenos, the story commences a full century before the gameplay unfolds, during a golden age of heroic exploits, political stability, robust trade, and flourishing religious expression. 
Without going into too much detail, a malevolent force emerges, a murder occurs, and the gods succumb to madness, disrupting the natural order. 
A band of warriors unites to vanquish the malevolent force, but a once-trusted figure betrays them, leading to their defeat. The golden age definitively ends, yielding to decades of darkness, suspicion, and treacherous ambition.
This event is known as the Cataclysm. 
While the Cataclysm itself has become legend, its repercussions are pervasive, manifesting as hellish, stalking creatures and profoundly negative influences. 
The monsters that patrol the wilderness are one challenge, but the true peril for humanity stems from within, the most perilous legacy of the Cataclysm being the suspicion and hostility that now reside in the hearts of men. 
And things are about to worsen significantly. 
Tereno

The realm of Tereno comprises five distinct continents, each with unique attributes. 
The Vordlands is a stable mountainous region, akin to Central Europe, while Siborni is a prosperous maritime civilization reminiscent of medieval Italy. 
Then there’s Urklund, a frigid, remote region inhabited by formidable people, fearsome creatures, and perpetually warring clans. Hanchura is a vast, ancient continent resembling China, and Cartha is a similarly expansive landmass encompassing deserts, jungles, and magic. 
And then, nestled within the northern Vordlands mountains, there’s you, in your Holdfast, humanity's final bulwark. It is from here that you launch your campaign to vanquish the encroaching darkness. 
Heroes

Each of the 21 Hero types in Grimguard Tactics boasts its own richly detailed backstory. It would take us all day to describe them all, so we’ll give you a glimpse of what to expect by outlining the Mercenary’s story. 
Once a common mercenary for King Viktor of Aspenkeep, North Urklund, the Mercenary grew disillusioned when a specific mission required him to slay innocent Woodfae defending their homeland from the king’s encroaching workforce. 
Disgusted, the Mercenary journeyed south, only to be confronted by Viktor’s soldiers. He dispatched them easily and continued his journey, enduring a difficult existence on the road for several months before securing employment with Baron Wilhelm of Duskhall. 
The task? Suppressing a peasant uprising. Despite his prior misgivings, the Mercenary is not a man of strong morals. He will undertake almost any task for money and supplies—though he refuses to bear a lord’s mark. 
All of the characters in Grimguard Tactics possess similarly detailed biographies, contributing to the game’s exceptionally rich lore. If you’re a devotee of not only fantasy RPGs but the entire fantasy genre, this is the type of fictional world that you can immerse yourself in for weeks.
