FFXIV Mobile Version Listed in China's Lineup of Approved Games

A recent report from the video game market research firm Niko Partners has sparked excitement among gamers, suggesting that Square Enix and Tencent are collaborating on a mobile version of the popular MMO, Final Fantasy XIV. This news comes in the wake of China’s National Press and Publication Administration (NPPA) approving 15 video games for import and domestic publication, with the mobile version of Final Fantasy XIV listed among them. Tencent, a giant in the mobile gaming industry, is reportedly at the helm of developing this new mobile game, which is anticipated to be a standalone MMORPG distinct from its PC counterpart.

The lineup of approved games is impressive and diverse, including a mobile and PC version of Rainbow Six, two Marvel-based games (Marvel Snap and Marvel Rivals), and a mobile game inspired by Dynasty Warriors 8. This selection underscores the growing trend of bringing high-profile titles to mobile platforms, catering to the increasing demand for on-the-go gaming experiences.

Although the news of a Final Fantasy XIV mobile game has been circulating since last month, neither Tencent nor Square Enix has officially confirmed their involvement in this project. Daniel Ahmad from Niko Partners shared on his Twitter (X) account on August 3 that the mobile game is expected to be a separate entity from the PC version, but he emphasized that this information is based on "mostly industry chatter" and awaits official confirmation.

Tencent's involvement in this project aligns with their significant presence in the mobile gaming sector. The rumored partnership with Square Enix is seen as part of a broader strategy to expand into multiplatform gaming. Earlier in May, Square Enix announced their intention to "aggressively pursue a multiplatform strategy" for their flagship titles, including Final Fantasy. This move signals a shift towards making their renowned games accessible across various platforms, meeting the evolving preferences of gamers worldwide.
