A fan has completely recreated the Elden Ring in Excel
A Reddit user, brightyh360, shared an incredible project on the r/excel subreddit: a top-down version of Elden Ring, painstakingly recreated in Microsoft Excel. This feat of programming and dedication took approximately 40 hours—20 for coding and 20 for testing and debugging. The creator used formulas, spreadsheets, and VBA to bring this ambitious project to life.
The impressive in-game features include:
- A sprawling 90,000-cell map
- Over 60 weapons
- More than 50 enemy types
- Character and weapon upgrade systems
- Three distinct character classes (tank, mage, assassin)
- 25+ armor sets
- Six NPCs with associated quests
- Four different game endings
While completely free to play, the game utilizes keyboard shortcuts for control: CTRL + WASD for movement and CTRL + E for interaction. Reddit moderators have verified the file's safety, but users are advised to exercise caution due to the extensive use of macros.
Interestingly, the game's Erd Tree sparked a festive comparison to a Christmas tree on Christmas Eve. User Independent-Design17 suggested a possible real-world inspiration: the Australian Christmas tree (Nuytsia floribunda). They highlighted the striking resemblance between the in-game Small Erd Trees and this Australian species. Further comparisons draw parallels between the game's catacombs (located at the Erd Tree's roots, leading to the souls of the dead) and the Aboriginal cultural significance of Nuytsia as a "spirit tree," its vibrant colors associated with the sunset (the supposed path of spirits), and each flowering branch representing a departed soul.
