Board Up Windows for Undead Apocalypse: Project Zomboid Guide

Author : Patrick Update : Feb 11,2025

Securing your shelter in the zombie-infested world of Project Zomboid is crucial. While finding a safe haven is the first step, protecting it from the undead hordes requires strategic defense. This guide focuses on a fundamental yet effective method: barricading windows.

Barricading Windows in Project Zomboid

To effectively board up your windows, gather these essential supplies: one wooden plank, a hammer, and four nails. Once you've collected these items, simply right-click on the target window. Your character will automatically begin securing the plank. Each window supports up to four planks for enhanced protection.

Locating the necessary materials is relatively straightforward. Hammers and nails are commonly found in toolboxes, garages, sheds, closets, and similar locations. Wooden planks are frequently discovered at construction sites. In a pinch, you can dismantle wooden furniture (shelves, chairs, etc.) to obtain planks. Administrators can utilize the "/additem" command to spawn items directly.

Barricaded windows significantly hinder zombie access compared to unprotected windows. The more planks you add, the more time it takes for zombies to breach the barrier. To remove planks, right-click the boards and select "Remove." Note that you'll need either a claw hammer or a crowbar to perform this action.

It's important to note that large furniture items (bookshelves, refrigerators, etc.) are ineffective as window barricades. Characters and zombies will pass through them, rendering them useless for defense.

While this guide focuses on basic wooden barricades, stronger defenses can be constructed using metal bars or sheets, though this requires sufficient Metalworking skill.
