Larian Studios, following the phenomenal success of Baldur's Gate 3, has officially shifted its development focus to a new, unannounced project. While limited post-launch support for BG3 continues, including the upcoming Patch 8 with new features, the studio is largely moving on.

Before BG3's late 2023 release, Larian established itself as a CRPG powerhouse with the Divinity: Original Sin series. This success paved the way for their critically acclaimed Baldur's Gate 3, a game that garnered numerous Game of the Year awards and attracted a massive player base, significantly boosting Larian's reputation.

In a statement, Larian confirmed its complete dedication to its next game, implementing a media blackout to maintain focus. While Patch 8 offers some additional BG3 content, further support appears minimal.

The nature of Larian's next title remains shrouded in mystery. Although they opened a new studio in mid-2024 to work on two ambitious RPGs, the current status of these projects is unclear. Speculation ranges from a Divinity: Original Sin 3 to a completely new IP, leveraging the lessons learned from BG3's triumph.

The future of the Baldur's Gate franchise is equally uncertain. With Larian's departure, Wizards of the Coast faces the challenge of finding a suitable successor, a task made daunting by BG3's high benchmark. However, the possibility of familiar faces returning in future installments remains, as several BG3 actors have expressed openness to reprising their roles.
