Avowed: Should Ilora Be Freed?

Author : Patrick Update : Mar 13,2025

At the start of Avowed, you face a crucial decision: free the suspicious prisoner Ilora from her cell in Fort Northreach, or leave her behind. Your ultimate goal is to use her boat to reach Paradis. This guide explores whether freeing or abandoning Ilora is the better choice.

Should You Free or Leave Ilora?

While Avowed encourages roleplaying your character as you see fit, freeing Ilora is strongly recommended. This path significantly simplifies Fort Northreach and unlocks a future side quest.

What Happens If You Free Ilora in Avowed?

Freeing Ilora provides invaluable assistance in overcoming Fort Northreach's challenges, including defeating Steadman Ralke, the area boss. Early in the game, your resources are limited, making Ilora's aid incredibly beneficial. Furthermore, saving Ilora significantly eases the later "Escape Plan" side quest (without revealing spoilers).

How to Free Ilora

Ilora reveals the key to her cell is located in the Warden's Room. Access this room by heading to the hallway's end, climbing crates, jumping to the platform, and entering the passage above. Break through the boards on your right to reach the Warden's Room. The key is near the door. Regardless of your decision regarding Ilora, use this key to unlock the adjacent cell and obtain the Deerskin Gloves.

What Happens If You Don't Free Ilora in Avowed?

Choosing not to free Ilora makes Fort Northreach considerably more difficult, significantly hindering progress in the "Escape Plan" side quest. Ironically, she won't remain imprisoned; you'll instead face her in combat, further complicating your escape. However, as a consequence of your actions, you will be able to loot her body later.

This concludes our guide on whether to free Ilora in Avowed.
