Atari Classics Resurface: 39 Games Reborn
Atari's 50th Anniversary Celebration Expands with 39 More Classic Games
Atari, a pioneering force in the early days of home video game consoles, is revisiting its rich history with an expanded edition of its 50th-anniversary collection. The original Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration featured over 90 retro titles, spanning from the Atari 2600 to the Atari Jaguar, and included remasters of beloved classics. This comprehensive package also offered a five-part interactive timeline detailing Atari's journey.
But the celebration isn't over. On October 25th, 2024, the Extended Edition will launch across major consoles and the Atari VCS, adding a whopping 39 more games to the mix. This significant expansion also introduces two new timelines: "The Wider World of Atari" and "The First Console War."
"The Wider World of Atari" will showcase 19 playable games and eight video segments, highlighting Atari's enduring influence on gaming throughout the decades. Expect fresh interviews, vintage advertisements, and historical artifacts meticulously compiled by Digital Eclipse.
"The First Console War" delves into the legendary rivalry between the Atari 2600 and Mattel's Intellivision during the early 1980s. This timeline will feature 20 playable games and six video segments, recounting a pivotal period in gaming history that ultimately saw Atari emerge victorious, albeit briefly before the 1983 video game crash.
While the full list of new additions remains undisclosed, the expansion promises a deeper look at the iconic 1980 shooter Berzerk, alongside lesser-known titles from the late 80s and fan favorites from Mattel's M Network division.
A physical release is also planned for Nintendo Switch and PS5. The Switch version boasts a Steelbook case with additional goodies like Atari 2600 art cards, miniature arcade marquee signs, and a replica Al Alcorn business card. This special edition will be priced at $49.99, while the standard digital edition will cost $39.99. Get ready to revisit gaming history!
