Making friends is key to thriving in Stardew Valley's charming Pelican Town. This guide details how to boost your relationships with villagers, whether you're aiming for friendship or romance. While talking and gifting are crucial, not all actions are equal. Let's delve into maximizing your friendship points.
Updated January 4, 2025, by Demaris Oxman: The 1.6 update has brought many back to Stardew Valley, or introduced new players. While the friendship system remains largely the same, 1.6 additions are noted below.
The Heart System
Access your relationship status with each NPC via the in-game menu's heart tab. This shows friendship levels (hearts) earned. Reaching heart milestones unlocks special events, mailed recipes, and unique dialogue. However, the heart display doesn't fully explain how friendship is earned.
Understanding Friendship Points
One heart requires 250 friendship points. Most interactions (talking, gifting) impact this score. Positive actions earn points; ignoring villagers or negative actions decrease it.
Accelerating Friendship
For faster friendship gains, acquire the "Friendship 101" book. Found as the ninth Prize Machine prize (Mayor's Mansion) or occasionally from the Year 3 Bookseller (9% chance), it costs 20,000g. Reading it grants a permanent 10% friendship point boost. Note: This bonus doesn't affect friendship decreases.
Friendship Point Values: Interactions
Many actions affect friendship points.
Daily Interactions
- Talking: +20 points (or +10 if the villager is busy). Daily conversation prevents friendship decay (-2 points/day).
- Bulletin Board Deliveries: +150 points with the recipient.
- Ignoring Villagers: Friendship decay (-2 points/day, -10 with bouquets, -20 for spouse).
Gifting
- Loved Gifts: +80 points
- Liked Gifts: +45 points
- Neutral Gifts: +20 points
- Disliked Gifts: -20 points
- Hated Gifts: -40 points
Gifts given on the Feast of the Winter Star are 5x, and birthday gifts are 8x their usual point value.
Stardrop Tea
This universally-loved beverage grants +250 points (+750 on birthdays/Winter Star). Sources include the Prize Machine, Golden Fishing Chests, Helper's Bundle completion, and high-level Raccoon requests.
Movie Theater
Movie dates grant points based on movie and concession choices:
- Loved Movie: +200 points
- Liked Movie: +100 points
- Disliked Movie: 0 points
- Loved Concession: +50 points
- Liked Concession: +25 points
- Disliked Concession: 0 points
Conversations and Dialogue
Dialogue choices can yield +10 to +50 points, or cause decreases. Heart Events offer similar opportunities for significant friendship changes.
Festivals and Events
- Flower Dance (4+ hearts): +250 points
- Luau: Soup contributions affect friendship (+120 to -100 points).
- Community Center (Bulletin Board bundles): +500 points (2 hearts) with each non-datable villager.
