Sony Has Established a New AAA PlayStation Studio

Sony Unveils a New PlayStation Studio in Los Angeles

A recently posted job listing confirms Sony's establishment of a new AAA game studio in Los Angeles, California. This marks the 20th first-party studio under the PlayStation umbrella and is currently developing a highly anticipated, original AAA title for the PS5.

The gaming world is buzzing with excitement, as PlayStation's first-party studios are renowned for their high-quality productions. Fans eagerly await news of upcoming titles from established giants like Santa Monica Studio, Naughty Dog, and Insomniac Games. Sony's strategic acquisitions in recent years, including Housemarque, Bluepoint Games, and Firesprite, have further strengthened its first-party lineup. Now, a mysterious new studio adds to the anticipation.

This unnamed Los Angeles-based studio is creating a groundbreaking original AAA IP, as revealed in a job posting for a Project Senior Producer. Speculation regarding the studio's origins centers on two possibilities. One theory suggests it may be a spin-off team from Bungie, stemming from the studio's 2024 layoffs where 155 employees transitioned to Sony Interactive Entertainment. This could be linked to Bungie's "Gummybears" incubation project.

A Resurrected Project?

Another strong contender is the team led by industry veteran Jason Blundell, known for his work on Call of Duty: Black Ops. Blundell co-founded Deviation Games, which was developing a AAA PS5 title before its closure in March 2024. However, many former Deviation Games employees joined PlayStation in May 2024, forming a new team under Blundell's leadership. Considering the longer development time, this team is a likely candidate for the new Los Angeles studio. The project they're working on remains undisclosed, but speculation suggests it might be a continuation or a reboot of Deviation Games' previous endeavor.

While a formal announcement from Sony is likely some time away, the news of yet another first-party PlayStation game in development is cause for celebration among fans.
