Civilization 7 Dev Firaxis Says 'There's Hope for Gandhi, Yet'

Civilization 7's release has left many veteran players wondering about the absence of a familiar face: Mahatma Gandhi. A staple of the series since 1991, his omission is notable. However, according to Civilization 7 lead designer Ed Beach, Gandhi's absence is not permanent.

Gandhi's potential return as DLC

Beach confirmed that Gandhi's inclusion is part of a longer-term plan, suggesting his return as DLC. He explained that Firaxis faces tough choices when selecting civilizations for the base game, often leaving out popular choices to include newer, exciting options. This has happened before; Mongolia and Persia, for example, were absent from the base games of previous Civilization titles.

While the community expresses concern about missing civilizations like Great Britain (which, along with Carthage, is slated for release in March 2025 as part of The Crossroads of the World Collection DLC, followed by Bulgaria and Nepal), Beach assures players that Firaxis considers the long-term roadmap for adding leaders and civilizations. Therefore, there's hope for Gandhi's eventual return.

This news comes amidst mixed user reviews on Steam for Civilization 7, citing issues such as the user interface, limited map variety, and missing features. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick acknowledged the negative feedback but expressed confidence that the core Civilization fanbase will embrace the game with more playtime, deeming its initial performance "very encouraging."
