Alien VFX Update Sparks Fan Debate
Alien: Romulus, a critical and commercial success, is already slated for a sequel. However, one element consistently criticized was the CGI depiction of Ian Holm.
Holm, who passed away in 2020, famously portrayed Ash in Ridley Scott's Alien. His controversial CGI resurrection in Alien: Romulus drew widespread criticism for its distracting and unrealistic appearance. The effect was so poorly received that a fan edit removed his character entirely.
Director Fede Alvarez addressed the issue, acknowledging time constraints during post-production as the reason for the subpar CGI in the theatrical release. He stated in an Empire interview that improvements were made for the home release.

Alvarez confirmed that the home release features enhanced visuals, prioritizing practical puppetry over CGI. However, fan reaction remains mixed. While some acknowledge a slight improvement, many still find the CGI distracting and question the necessity of Holm's inclusion.
A Reddit thread (u/Davidedby in LV426) showcases comparisons, highlighting that the home release uses shots emphasizing the practical effects, minimizing the jarring CGI face. Comments range from "Better, but still awfully uncanny" to criticisms of the decision to use Holm's likeness at all.
Despite the persistent criticism of the Holm CGI, Alien: Romulus's box office success ($350 million globally) has greenlit a sequel, with Alvarez potentially returning to direct.
